What are the risks associated with acupuncture or herbal medicine? Regarding acupuncture, possible risks are needles breaking off, being ingested (dogs and cats), or piercing the body wall, thereby compromising the thoracic or abdominal cavity. These are very rare and steps are taken to prevent these from occurring. Additionally, to prevent infection, sterile needles are used every time.
Herbal medicines are inherently more risky as they are consumed into the body. Drug interactions can be prevented if the practitioner is informed of all the medications the animal is on, but this is always a slight possibility. Contamination with non-medicinal herbs, toxic herbs, bacteria, heavy metals and pesticides has been reported. One way to avoid this is to purchase herbs from reputable manufacturers. Sayre Veterinary Acupuncture orders herbal formulas from a select few reputable companies. These companies import all the raw materials (individual herbs), which are tested for their authenticity and for the above-mentioned contaminants.
How much does it cost? Prices vary depending on your location and the type of animal being treated. Please contact us for an estimate.
Will my pet always need acupuncture? It really depends. Most cases have an end-point, and that is what we aim for. However, chronic progressive diseases such as arthritis, diabetes and others may require long-term intermittent treatment.
Can acupuncture and herbal medicine be used along with standard treatments and drugs? Yes. The goal in every case is to make the animal feel better, by any means which has been deemed effective and relatively safe based on both research and experience.
How long will it take to see improvement in my pet’s condition? Depending on what the issue is, improvements may be seen after the first treatment. Generally the longer-standing a problem is, the more time it will take to improve. Keeping this in mind, changes are typically seen within the first three or four treatments.
